I have my Civ Pro 1 exam next Thursday, and legitimately don't understand or know much of anything. Best possible advice? The exam is closed book but will include a list of the cases and rules he wants us to cite to.

I've heard good things about the Freer lecture, which I do have, but is that a waste of time if I have to memorize?

ETA: I also have the E&E and the Gilbert Law Summaries supplements.

Freer lecture is worth it. Helps you to take a step back and look at the forest and not the trees. Helps tie in everything that you have learned.

Also, I cannot recommend enough Acing Civil procedure. It is really short and takes you step by step through how to write an answer.

I really like the E&E. The exercises are useful but can be a little overkill; given that you're short on time, you may as well just do a few every chapter, or just skim 'm. Despite it's daunting length, it's actually a fairly quick read, given that the subject matter is civ pro. Be sure to skip whatever wasn't covered in your course (we didn't do service, jury selection, compulsory joinder, etc., which took out almost a third of the book)

I found it was helpful for me to chart things out sequentially, and see the doctrines evolving over time. Kinda helps you contextualize everything.

Is that worthwhile though if my exam is closed book? I still have to memorize many cases and rules so I can cite them.

It's def worth it if you're starting at zero and are a little overwhelmed at getting started. It's probably worth it just to check your understanding and gain perspective (like Spanish Main is advocating). The contracts lecture (all 1L doctrinal classes are included in the $50) is well regarded (I think it's better than the CivPro) and property isn't too bad, especially for future interests. I wouldn't bother with torts or crim.

contracts lecture is free, I think they raised the price for the 1L package containing the other stuff to $99, which I find excessive (but then again I feel like I know a fair amount about civ pro at this point)

if they raised the price to $100, the contracts lecture is free, and you're not freaking out over CivPro, then I'd say that it's not worth it.

Caveat that property is significantly more confusing than civpro though so...

If It's just Freer's civ pro lecture you're talking about I have the audio of that already.

I genuinely loved the "Inside Civ Pro" hornbook. Your law library will have it on reserve. It's clear, concise and actually explains things. Find this, read this, and then do whatever memorizing works for you.

Does anyone know if the Rich Freer lecture on CD is the same as the offering by barbri?

Who wrote this? The acing one was easy to pick out but I want to be sure I'm looking for the write hornbook here.

Also, I keep hearing amazing things about this supplement. The problem is it's really expensive. Amazon has a rental available but only of the 2nd edition...think it's hugely different or should it be fine?

I just had my Civ Pro exam today and I found Crunchtime to be very helpful. It's much more condensed than the Glannon E&E, but if you are short on time, it's helpful. The exam tips were more helpful than I thought they would be and there are a bunch of flow charts to walk you through all the different forks in procedure. If you know zero about Civ Pro, this would be a relatively worthless supplement and I'm not sure what you would do with only a week left. If you know at least the basics and have some notes from class, the brevity of this supplement is nice compared to the E&E. I got mine used for around $9 on Amazon.
I found the E&E to be more helpful with some parts about class during the semester that were confusing, mainly when I had more time to study. The problem with the E&E is that it might not cover the specifics of a particular rule as in depth as you need. One of my exam questions was a 40 minute, 1000 word essay about filing a 12(b)(6) motion. You're probably best off getting old exams/practice exams to work on and finding out what you have the most trouble with.

But with that said, you gotta do Erie the way your professor told you to do it. Apparently professors can differ on how that mess should be approached, so just be aware that Freer could get you into a bit of trouble there.
