How to Best & Efficiently Use E&E’s Earlier

Post by Shema » Tue Sep 15, 2015 6:06 pm

Any “G-d fearing” 1L on TLS has read about the value of E&E’s to being exam ready. Obviously, the earlier you are exam ready, the best. When I was a 1L I noticed that I wasn’t able to dive into E&E’s until mid way through the semester and sometimes later. Second semester I had a guy pair the E&E directly with my syllabi. It was pretty neat because he understood enough about how professors approach law school that based on my syllabus, the course case book and a previous outline I provided him that he pin pointed the exact sections of the E&E that would be helpful for me to read (because they matched what my professor would be teaching) versus unrelated material that my profs were not covering and would only confuse me. This made me light years more efficient and saved my tons of time which I then used to gain more exam writing experience. He now does this for free so check out this link: https://youtu.be/k9BxqScKWI8

This may not work for everyone and I’m sure there are others who can offer even more tips. I can tell you that pairing the E&E directly to my courses worked for me because I was able to do E&E reading along side my class prep. This helped me read and comprehend cases faster as well as comprehend class better because I understood the context of the legal concepts more which made class/lecture more like a review and less like the first time I was learning material. I had anxiety as a 1L so I need that.

Hope this helps!

You don't need a guy to tell you to do the section that corresponds to the syllabus.

obvious spammer for mylawacademy
multiple direct links to mylawacademy, and many youtube links promoting mylawacademy and affiliated sites

While everyone's got there own approach I wanted to share the one I used as well as somethings I wish I had known about when I was in Civ Pro that I now tell other newly minted 1Ls. But I'm only one voice I hope there are others who can share there Civ Pro recommendations.

New Online resources:

1) Quimbee https://www.quimbee.com/
The Quimbee website (named after the Simpson's Mayor Quimbee) is relatively new and I think it is best for case briefs. It's a subscription site but compared to buyingbooks it can save you some money (of course when it first launched it was very affordable. They also have videos or lectures which are okay but the production could be better and more entertaining. While I am not a fan of their videos it does break things up if you need a relief from text or casebook reading. However, I do think that quimbee's questions and answers can be helpful.

2) My Law Academy https://www.mylawacademy.com
This is an awesome new site that I wish was available when I was in law school. The cool thing about it is how clear the videos make civ pro concepts - which is almost an impossible task that they do pretty well. The website is still in its infancy and it would be nice if they covered other courses but for Civ Pro its worth checking out. I think that the strength of these videos is that they can save you time in helping you to understand civ pro concepts faster since they are presented from an exam context. One of the toughest things about civ pro is the time it takes to put all of the little pieces together into a working big picture system and this site does it best.

Old Tricks:

1) A good previous outline
This is no big secret to most TLSers but I can't stress how important it is to have a previous outline for your specific civ pro professor. A generic outline for civ pro is especially problematic because this is an area of law where professors tend to take varied opinions on doctrinal concepts. Areas of law like 12(b)(6) and the Erie Doctrine can be hot beds for controversy among legal scholars (i.e. professors) and a strong previous outline will tell you where your professor stands on the topics or areas of law in advance of even hearing them during class so that you can prepare in advance and be ready to take practice exams earlier. If you are having trouble finding a good outline checkout Outline Depot http://www.outlinedepot.com/. Because it cost money I would suggest being more social with 2Ls and 3Ls but if the professor's material is hard to find you might want to check out this site.

2) Acing Civ Pro http://www.amazon.com/Acing-Civil-Proce ... 1628100419
Of the acing series this text is by far the most helpful. I make this point because I do not mean to recommend Acing for all courses but for Civ Pro I think it is a gem. I like it because it is concise and does a lot of the heavy lifting needed to understand how several civ pro rules tie together so that you can see the big picture. The best thing about Acing is the checklist at the end of each brief chapter. It's awesome. At first glance acing will seem like its just too small to be helpful for a class like civ pro and its never ending rules, but don't be fooled you will love Acing and it will safe you time.

3) Civ Pro E&E
ISBN13: 978-1454815488
People rave about E&E's but I am selective about them. For instance, I don't like the E&E for contracts and I prefer another supplement I believe is superior. However, for Civ Pro there is not yet a better book supplement on the market for getting exam practice and learning how to string the rules together into a comprehensive exam analysis. I think that it is best to begin using the E&E early in the semester. Most students wait too far down the road to begin using the E&E. I think it is best to read the relevant E&E chapters as they are discussed in class so that you can develop exam skills in real time with class coverage.

Other sites and links are to helpful websites such as Quimbee, Outline depot, amazon and E&E links. None of these things I have a financial interest in. I thought the goal of this thread was to be helpful. Again this is not spam dude.

no, you mixed in your shitty website with links to quimbee and outline depot to conceal the fact that you were spamming

it's patently obvious from your post history that you are the creator of mylawacademy
mylawacademy.com was registered on august 18, 2015, less than one month ago. the site literally didn't exist a month ago
since that time, you have posted no less than six links promoting mylawacademy

oh, but i'm sure you don't have a financial interest in this

Dude you have replied to me several times and given no suggestions to help 1Ls. Instead you have launched a campaign against a scam website you persist that I own. If you think the law academy has a $6 scam then report them to law enforcement. I thought the videos were helpful and turned the FREE VIDEOS on to other 1Ls on TLS along with mostly other sites that I think are helpful and low cost. I don't get you but all I have done is suggest several free resources to 1Ls who like me might like to know of low cost alternatives to make law school more efficient.

dialog from actual mylawacademy video:
Hey guys, whassup? This is Super Cool. For a head start on torts, check out this video on the Hand Formula. First, let’s get Big Steve to give us a snapshot of the big picture.

[“Mo Money Mo Problems” literally starts playing in the background, as a cartoon boombox and a man wearing a sideways baseball cap and five cameras materializes in front of a wall of graffiti]
more actual dialog:
Did you know I read on a reputable blog that 3 out of ever 2 1Ls suffers from irritable boredom syndrome. It’s true. But learning the law doesn’t have to be boring. And it’s really one of the way that law school is grossly inefficient. Law Academy videos are the key. You’ll learn a lot more and in a lot less time. Because you’ll actually enjoy the experience instead of dreading it. To prove that Law Academy videos are almost as cool as Yours Truly, our first series has taken on the absolute hardest and most feared 1L course ever. Yes, you guessed it, Civ Pro. So, if you’re a gunner, save some money, be efficient with your time, and have a little fun while you’re at it. If you’re not a gunner, well, good luck out there. This is Super Cool. Welcome to the Law Academy.

You're awfully offensive about one of several sites and resources I recommended for 1Ls.

You caught me Detective Brut... you've got me copper... I am the owner of all of the internet resources I've recommended in my TLS posts (Quimbee, Amazon, Outline Depot, Law Academy and Bar Bri). Your keen detective skills have rooted out my crazed acquisition scheme. You must have aced Evidence.

Well Detective Brut, I think I'll return to what I do and leave you to what you do... Detective work.

Here's some more helpful info for 1Ls looking to be more efficient with their time.

BarBri 1L lectures. Bar Bri is in the process of re-recording their 1L videos. Basically for each 1L course there are BarBri 1L lectures. They are pretty awesome in that they actually teach substantive material in a shorter time than it would talk to learn the info in class. Plus you could do it anywhere. I'd recommend watching the video on a topic before the class that will discuss that topic. This way you will step into class with a better context of the entire area of law.

The coolest thing about these videos is that they are free when you find a BarBri rep on campus because they will give you an access code for the 1L lectures. BarBri reps are on most every law school campus and are usually 2Ls or 3Ls who sometimes sit at a table or make announcements in class a little later in the semester. Ask around now and find your campus rep in order to get the free code. Otherwise, I think access to all the lectures will cost you about $50.

While many professors have an approach to the law that is unique to them, the Bar Bri videos are still a powerful tool because they are taught by leading professors and if you view them before or after your professor lectures on the same content they will reinforce comprehension or get you to comprehension faster. For me it was all about getting to outlining and taking practice exams as early as possible and the Bar Bri videos were helpful.

With Detective Brut's express consent here is link to my website... BarBri

This is pretty credited.

Shema, you've posted that you started at Loyola and then attended a T10, but you've also posted as a USC student; you've alted before to sockpuppet your posts recommending tutors (whose contact info you could conveniently provide). It's against the rules here to post links to outside commercial resources, like lawacademy.com, which charges for access. If you post any further such links you'll be permanently banned.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
