Yep. Biglaw sounds shitty, I don't see myself doing anything else. I want work-life balance, and that just isn't going to happen with biglaw. I had no debt, a STEM degree, so I'm jumping ship to shift work in chemical industry. I'll be 50k+ starting out, avg 180 days off/year. Seemed like a better option.

Sounds like the right choice Attax. Good job figuring that out BEFORE the debt and soul-crushing lawyer lifestyle.

Out of curiosity, what triggered this? I remember your being pretty gung-ho about UT.

180 days off per year sounds pretty sweet.

But I started pondering this a bit, I wondered how it compared to a Fed worker (with over three years of service), the basic break down is:

days off/year
104 - weekend days
20 - vacation days
10 - holidays
13 - sick days
26 - alt work days on a 9/80 schedule
====
173 days off

Admittedly this requires slight long than 'standard' days, and for those who wish it there may be options for 10 hour shifts which would double up the alt work days off. Also, most people are unlikely to use all of their sick leave issued in a year, but the time is there should it be needed.

ETA:
Technically the holidays/vacation/sick days are based on 8 hour days, so to keep the same number of days, one would need to work an extra hour for each of these off days within the pay period that you are taking them to avoid falling behind on you time off for the alt work off days.

FWIW I think bankruptme is also dropping out? Sorry if he isn't, I don't feel like factchecking.

What triggered it was I didn't see myself doing anything but biglaw, and I have other interests in life that I don't want to sacrifice for a career. Couple with opportunities for working in a field I enjoy, being financially secure, and having lots of time off is great.

Oh, and its 180 off before vacation, holiday, sick leave.

I don't get people who make threads like these. Drop out, fine, why make thread on TLS celebrating this and talking about how much better your life is going to be than your fellow law students though?

So you wasted a year of your life, paid a year of tuition, and failed? Congrats

Oh I don't know, maybe the same reason people who should have retaken start threads telling people to retake. Or to let other people that are considering dropping out know that they're not the only ones and that there can be a light at the end of the tunnel. Or giving people the opportunity to talk about their options in a safe environment (which is basically non-existant in the real world).

But good job being a dick.

What BMore said. Plus having someone to talk to about it was nice for me as well, and I really only knew others who left law school on here and in New Girl.

Also, if you don't want to hear us talk about how better life is going, you can either
a) Drop out as well
b) GTFO and mind your own business

And no I didn't waste a year. I likely couldn't have gotten the job I did right after school, it pays way above market and was super lucky, didn't pay any money, and didn't fail out. Maybe you're just bitter for failing after paying tuition.

This exactly. If doing well throughout 1L year, but taking a better opportunity after a lot of thoughtful contemplation is failing, then bearsfan, you need some perspective on what failing is.

Also, still occasionally debate saying screw it and leaving to go try and make it on Broadway. Talk about pipe dreams.

Soooo terrible that someone took doctrinal education to the chemical industry! Sounds awful for society!

if this is legit and diligently thought through, power to you -- if this is just a momentary reaction to 1L finals anxiety blown way out of proportion, put the brakes on and take a deep breathe.
