I know someone with a rolly backpack; I keep tripping over it. :(

LOL at my UG there was this girl who would seriously run over people's feet with her rolly backpack and not even notice. It's made me instinctively keep a 20 ft boundary between myself and people with those things now.

I used to have a bulky backpack but now, instead, I use the locker a lot. For each class, I take the casebook and the laptop to class. I do the readings at school so there is no need to ever take books home.

good call. I use a coach bag as well (though more toward a briefcase than a messenger bag)

Law school sounds dangerous.

I'll start with a regular backpack, but that may change. If I find myself carrying more than one book and my laptop, I'll get a rolly. Since I'm pushing 40, I really don't care about style :D .

I'll try to not hit anyone nice with it. Gunners beware.

Don't use a rolly backpack. I've never seen one in my law school.

Most people carry a laptop bag, either a messenger bag or a back pack. Some are large enough to fit text books in, others are small and only for a laptop and power cord, mouse, etc. Some people carry both a laptop bag and a backpack. Most people carry a laptop bag and then their books in their arms. Some girls use big purses that have laptop compartments.

Our law school has lockers, so you don't always need to be carrying all of your books.

The splitting up of a CB is something I have never seen. But what a great idea! I just jam everything into a backpack. Sometimes I have to carry an extra book. No biggie.

Sometimes I feel like I'm at the airport with all the rolling luggage people are using these days. That's not for me.

OK...not relevant to the OP but for anyone that subsequently chimes in...what's the best type (not brand) of briefcase?? I wonder if mine's too small. I like it but I feel inadequate (lol). Is the file cabinet version too much? What's a guy to do?

I think I will get one of those Timbuk2 bags the bike messengers sling around themselves.

Plus then I can annoy everyone by being a hipster.

EVERYONE uses those Timbuk2 bags where I work! They're great for holding a lot of stuff and a laptop!

I'm a sucker for this sweet baby I carry around everywhere. It's huge but distributes all 35lbs I occasionally lug on my 5'4", 115lb frame quite nicely:

I also carry a lexisnexis tote (I'm a nerd) when I'm just grabbing a few things for the lib.

Lastly, I bought this for interviews...how cool/tool do I feel? I love it:

I have a stylish, very cushioned rectangular backpack with a handle, shoulder strap, water bottle pocket, a ton of pockets, and of course a laptop compartment. It has a wide square shape, so it distributes the weight across the width of your back and doesn't weigh you down as much. It's extremely sturdy and easy to carry and it doesn't scream "book bag" -- it's something you could take to the gym or anywhere. It's from LL Bean, but I don't know if they still sell them. I ordered mine in fuschia (EDIT: "raspberry") and black with my name monogrammed on it.

I would love some more examples of what current students are using...

I am planning on a regular large backpack + laptop tote.

Anyone buy something specifically for carrying books/laptop that they thought would work, but ended up getting something different? Please discuss. Much thanks.

I got a Patagonia Half Mass bag for school -- built in laptop sleeve, can carry a bunch of shit, doesn't look too big. It's black with a reflective stripe, so it doesn't look crazy.

I just used it as my only bag for a 4 day trip to NYC.

At CLS, I remember this woman with a ROLLING SUITCASE who went into the local deli and bought like $30 worth of stuff and managed to stuff it all into her suitcase. (She also had an oversized purse which probably could fit 1 or 2 E&E's).

Those messenger bags, while they look very cool, always hurt my shoulders. I would love to use a timbuk2 bag but I know it won't work. My curved spine will hate me.

I bought a nice looking leather tote with a laptop sleeve that fits two casebooks and a rules book of some sort, plus a laptop and a bottle of water. All this without warping the bag. It's pretty good. I got it at staples for about 100 bucks.

I also have a small canvas tote for the days that require like 4 casebooks and a lunch box (yeah, we have lunch boxes in law school. Bad ass right?)

This is the best thread that i have read thus far, ps. LOVE it!

I'm planning to sport a Longchamp...i'm currently working in France and they're the favorite accessory of all the french fashion victims. If you don't live in NY and can't visit the Longchamp boutique, you can order (and customize) them online at http://www.longchamp.com
