Taking a mental day

Has any of the more senior posters on this site ever done this? I'm starting to feel burnt out and I'm wondering if I should skip class Wednesday and do nothing law related just to give myself a break. Dumb idea?

Very. Every minute you're not giving your all is a minute you're falling behind.

They have this thing called the weekend where they don't teach classes. maybe you should wait for that

I took them all the time as a 1L and I still take them now. Take a day and relax. Sometimes, that's the most efficient thing you can do.

BigZuck wrote:Dan, here's the thing- you're attending a school with poor job prospects and you say you're gunning for PI. Therefore, your grades won't really matter, but your hustle absolutely will. You also don't really learn much of practical value in most law school classes, especially the 1L doctrinal stuff, so you're not really missing anything.
Instead of worrying about what you're not learning in class where you're out of class, you should be worrying about the fact that you can't network/hustle/build skills outside of class when you're in class.
Going to class is one of your biggest impediments to getting a job as a lawyer right now IMO.
Bump
I really hope you're burning yourself out hustling and not on like the rule against perpetuities or the elements of IIED or other school stuff that doesn't matter

That's kind of where I'm coming from. The past few weekends I've had to work like hell so I haven't had a mental day away from the books in a few weeks. I jave pretty good handle on the material we're covering on Weds so I won't feel too guilty if I do

I understand that Zuck and appreciate your advice but I'm not trying to flunk out either. I still keep in close contact with my contacts at the PI job I interned at/want

At this point in the semester, you shouldn't be working more than just a few hours on the weekend anyway, so skipping that one week isn't going to kill you.

This isn't meaningless LSAT prep anymore, Dan. It's the big leagues. Time to man up.

Work like hell on the weekend doing what? Reading?
Take a weekend day off. No reason to be killing yourself at this point.

Don't let other 1Ls trick you into thinking that you need to go to class so that you can listen to their VERY IMPORTANT arguments about the meaning of the word chicken; otherwise you'll be FALLING BEHIND.
Should you go to most classes? Yes, if only because you're paying an obscene amount of money to attend law school, and because it's good to make friends with your classmates/network.
Is class useful? Sometimes/rarely. For the most part, you can learn what you need to from an outline three weeks before the exam. Seriously.
(My first semester of 1L, a 3L told me something similar and I didn't believe the her. I wanted to roll my eyes at her so hard. By second semester, I knew I was wrong and she was right -- law school lectures and readings are a very inefficient way to learn the material for the exam. I hate my younger 1L self. Hate. Hate. Hate.)

Not doing LSAT prep is how you end up at schools with sTTTTips in the first place
I forgot that Dan has to get a certain GPA to keep his scholarship. Still though, one day off shouldn't matter.

Yeah I was referencing the 20 choosing threads last cycle where he advocated that posters should not retake and should go to TTTs because TLSers are prestige whores.

Cookie? They're little footballs...
Anyway, Dan, I'm a fellow 1L, so take this with a grain of salt, but I'd save the 'days off' for days you actually
need them: doctor's appointments, family emergencies, weddings, etc, especially since you have GPA stips to meet. That said, I don't think a random day on the couch is going to destroy you or anything.

I took literally every Friday off. Had one class, then didn't give a shit till saturday morning. Took some saturdays off too. Worked out fine for me.
I ground like hell starting november 1 though.

If you're thinking you need to rest your brain by zoning out for a whole day, do it. Catch up later, your brain will work more efficiently when rested, saving you hours in the end.

No, trust your judgment. If you think it's best to take a day off, do it. Just know you have to make up those missed hours later, and be ready for that.

Actually more like a 30 min commute now. My folks live closer to school. I was up until midnight getting the work done for today so I can just relax, get lunch with my gf and hit the gym. Zuck are you a 2L/3L?

I would think that missing class would cause you more stress and work down the road.
