awkward question.

Alright, 1L here... so I have an internship with a small-time oil and gas title search company for the summer. I want to do oil and gas litigation, so hooray I'm excited! Small issue. The boss, who is a genuinely nice guy, emails me almost once a week to "hang out" aka go get drunk at a bar. I have gone out and drank with the boss man like 6 times by now, and I just got another email again from him today to "hang out." Don't get me wrong, I love drinking and talking sports as much as the next guy, but I'm finding it difficult to keep some type of professionalism when the boss man is trying to get me hammered once a week (usually Tuesdays). My question, what in the hell do I do?

- a grateful 1L

Drink water and or non alcoholic beer. Then show up the next day and be productive as always.

Personally I don't know if I would keep up with once a week drinking with Co workers.

lol wut. Is this just you and boss man, or additional people from the office? Sounds like a case of living vicariously through the young intern. Once every so often is fine, but I agree that weekly, scheduled bro-outs at the bar starts to become a bit weird.

If it bothers you, I would start feigning commitments so it doesn't become such a regular thing. Then it has less of a chance of reflecting poorly on your lack of love for drunktastic fun.

Get him drunk, pose him in awkward and potentially sexually harassing positions, photograph, and then blackmail him for a job after graduation.

It's legitimately only the boss and I. He's a nice guy like I said, isn't creepy or anything. However, I do believe I'm getting that "vicarious" lifestyle thing going on here. I HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED WORKING FOR HIM YET. I start after finals (T-minus 3 weeks). As far as the job later down the line goes, I only want to learn how to title abstract so I can be more marketable for an oil and gas firm for my 2L year.

I agree, this Tuesday night thing is wearing me out. I've got con law to outline, and I can't keep dropping 30 bucks on awkward sports talk...

somebody needs to ask the [potentially] incredibly relevant question of what gender OP is.

that actually is a fair point, I apologize. I am a male, as is the boss. There's nothing along those lines going on, at least from what I can tell.

It really is starting to become unnerving.

oh haha was not reading carefully enough.

yeah OP--it seems like you are pretty socially aware, but an unwanted and unexpected [homosexual, since you are a dude] sexual advance could really do a number on your upcoming summer experience...but you probably don't need me to tell you that. whatever you do, just don't get too drunk would be my 2 cents.

Fair point +1

Show up 20 minutes late for the next session and tell him you are in a study group and you are starting to study for finals and tell him you won't be able to hang out with him until finals are done. I don't see how you are going to get out of drinking with him in the summer unless you tell him you just found a gf or something.

Just tell him you're going into finals mode and that you'll hit him up after, then get drinks with him like one more time before your internship starts.

Thank you for the advice everybody. Like I said, quite a weird predicament to be in.

Show up with your significant other or a SO prop that makes the bro out lame. He won't ask you again.
