Pulling my GPA up?

I've been trying to find advice on this from various sources, but I was wondering how much I could pull up my GPA in an ideal world. (I know it's very difficult to predict success in law school, but it's mainly for inspiration. If I know what is possible, I think I'll work a bit harder.)
My current GPA is a 3.28 (15 credits). I'm not sure how a 4.0(15 credits) will change my GPA. Is it as simple as adding together the two GPAs and dividing by 2? Or is there more analysis to be done.
For reference: I was having a casual conversation with a 2L, who said he basically got a 3.28 his first semester and basically got all A's and had a cumulative GPA of 3.4. Anyone?
[Disclaimer: I'm fully aware this is possibly a silly question]

yes. that's how you average.

That's what I figured. Just confused by the 2L's comment that 3.28 + 4.0 (possibly)/2 = 3.41.
Thanks!

And this is why law students don't do math. But yes, adding the two GPAs and dividing by 2 will give you your cumulative GPA. It'll probably be on your transcript as well.

I am going with the notion of someone simply being bad at math.
Although it is not very far off if the student has a 3.28 after 3 semesters and thinks that they may be getting a 4.0 for their 4th semester.

Just FYI this only works because both semesters are 15 credits. If you have 15 first semester and 17 2nd semester, for example, the math would be a lot harder.
Source: I like spreadsheets a lot

That would require taking 68 credits during your first semester and 15 credits during your second semester.

GPA = [(Credit for Class 1 x GPA for Class 1) + (Credit for Class 2 x GPA for Class 2) + . . . + (Credit for Class n x GPA for Class n)]/(Credit for class 1 + Credit for Class 2 + . . . + Credit for Class n)
n = # of classes.
Re. the 2L in your post: Math does not check out unless you're allowed to take fewer classes during the second semester. 3.28 + 4.0 = 7.28; 7.28/2 = 3.64
^ Assuming A = 4.0
