Any big law associates ever fail the bar twice?

I think if you fail once you can re-take it, no problems. If you fail twice, it's the door, or so they say.

Anyone know anyone who has been in this position?

Most firms now place extreme emphasis on not failing and you _may_ get a second chance. I know of only one apocryphal story (from Cravath) where an associate failed twice and was asked out to lunch by the Managing Partner at the time, Allen Parker. At the end of lunch, Allen slid the check to the associate (which never would have been done otherwise). This was his way of saying the firm was getting tired of carrying the associate and he better not mess up a third time.

I have been at other firms where the second time meant you were out, no matter how beloved or how hard you were working....

The real lesson is...try not to fail at all, but if you do, don't fail the second time.

Couple great things, RedGiant Posts, BigRob answers, battle of the titans! Story itself also great, would love if the associate had taken a look at the check and slid it back saying "looks good!"

Not always...
