Disclosing Grades?

I did pretty well in my 1st semester and was wondering whether I should share my grades with friends or if that will get out to the whole grade and ultimately hurt me. If anyone has had such an experience or similar dilemna I'd love to hear your input. Thanks.

Getting your GPA tattooed to your forehead is probably best.

Post a screenshot of your grades on Facebook. That way you won't have to tell people in person (kinda awkward), but all your friends and family can "like" it.

Haha. What were you going to do, post them on Facebook? Why would you share your grades with them? How is this a dilemma?
Troll.

I just don't see what good could come of it. Theoretically, if your friends did worse they won't be bothered that you did better, and will be happy for you. But given the forced competition of law school, how likely do you think that is? And beyond having your friends get a warm fuzzy feeling about YOUR grades, what possible motivation could you have for telling them?

Thanks. Yeah I guess its probably not the best idea...

If someone really presses you, just say "I did well. I'm happy." Cause it's only the first semester and your GPA can totally still drop.

This. Karma is a mean bitch and bragging about grades (which is what it would be) seems like a way to get knocked down a peg next semester.

What do you expect to gain from doing this? However, I think it's fair to ask someone you're studying with how they did.

What's the point of disclosing grades? I can see the upside with the momentary circlejerk compliments, but given the curve, the person you're sharing with either did worse than you (makes them feel crappy) or better than you (makes you feel crappy). Don't be that person who fishes for compliments.
But maybe you both did really well, in which case you can have an awesome time and drink awesome shooters, listen to awesome music, and then just sit around and soak up each other's awesomeness.

I would never volunteer grade information. But if someone is rude enough to ask, I'll usually tell em.

Yeah and there are plenty of people who are rude and ask. Just wanted to know before I go back to school. Doesn't seem like its worth it.

You gotta tell people your grades so you make sure you hang out with the right people. If you don't put up your 10%er flag you'll have a shitty network in 10 years.

keep that shit a secret and be vague. I think I made the mistake of alluding to thinking I did really well in my con law midterm as one of the best in the class (due to my prof hinting at it) and I'm pretty sure most of my section knows and sort of hates me for it.

Yeah this. It's a good idea for life in general to not disclose everything you know if it isn't necessary. If YOU know you did well, let that be your little secret. It will give you confidence, and that confidence will serve you well as you keep going. I never told anyone in my school that I was top-o-the-class first semester (that's for non-law friends and family and anonymous internet forums only), but damn if it wasn't a good feeling when I came back at the beginning of second semester and knew, for myself, that I had beaten everyone. I'd rather be UNDERESTIMATED and then impress them (or beat them) than be expected to excel and run the chance of turning in an average or below-average performance, which is going to happen eventually.
Oh and talking about your grades to peers is a total asshole thing to do and, as mentioned, the fact that you weren't sure of whether it was suggests you're an asshole. Evaluate that. It's ok to be an asshole in some aspects of life-and a near requirement for a lawyer-but NO ONE likes a bragger. Even if asked point blank, stay sly.

1. You are allowed to be happy about your grades;
2. You shouldn't tell people your grades;
3. Tell your mother about your grades, she'll be happy;
4. Learn social skills; and,
5. Pretend you did shitty and get good grades again.

Unless you are sleeping with someone in your class, do not share your grades. Even in that case, be hesitant. Like batman, wear a mask.

My first year I didn't really share grades but by the time 2L began I had formed a few close friendships. We discuss our grades if it was a class we studied for together. Grades also come up if they took a class that I may be considering taking or vice versa. This is helpful when trying to gauge difficulty, how much work will be required, etc. Since you have just completed your first semester I doubt you have formed close friendships with classmates you know you can trust sharing this info with, But I do think as time progresses it's ok to share (if asked) in certain situations.

I think it is annoying that people wont share their grades. However, I realize I am a clear minority in this regard.
I wish everyone, with their grades, and class rank, was posted outside of the registrar. Then we would not have to wonder who is on top, or bottom. And all the awkwardness that curiosity brings would be moot!
It is natural to be curious about how you stack up against certain people.
IMO!
