Working for DHS, SEC or other federal agencies

So I was wondering if anyone is looking into to doing this or is doing this as an attorney for a federal agency. I came across some of the internship programs and they all seem very interesting. I wanted to know what steps were taken to secure this kind of employment for someone going to a school outside of DC. I have been heavily involved in my local government for about a year now and I noticed a public service background is looked highly upon when applying for internships. Thoughts on this?

Search these terms
federal site:top-law-schools.com
government site:top-law-schools.com
And peruse the employment forum.
Other people will probably come in with specific links.
