Chirelstein's treatise/book got me above median after doing no reading all semester. I had a take home tho.

In on Federal Income Taxation thread. I have Bankman's 16th as well, and my professor recommended the Chirelstein supplement.

So far my class has just been a replay of Econ 101. Great if you liked Econ 101.

This. Other than a guy calling Mitt Romney an idiot on the first day, I've had no idea what's been going on. Will be reading Part A of Chirelstein today, because Messrs. Bankman, Shapiro, and Stark are talking over me at the moment.

Really? I never took a law tax class (accounting here), but Econ 101 seems to be a strange thing to talk about in a federal tax class

Taxes as disincentives, deadweight losses, etc.

Agreed. I did some Econ in undergrad and this is a nice refresher course so far.

E & E read it twice - almost guarantees an A

This. Chirelstein definitely parses out material in great detail, but the E&E is the "here is the problem, here are the rules, here are the exceptions, here's the step-by-step." So for any exam that's likely to consist mostly of problems, E&E is your best plug and chug bet.
Also, I would recommend that, closer to finals after you've covered most of the big points, to have a look at the big Motro tax map (it comes with some of the Code supplements -- our library had it on reserve). As long as you can identify where to start on the giant flowchart, it will tell you the rest of the steps to solve problems.
I did both of those, with a little of extra work in the Q&A, got an A+ (having learned basically the entire course the week before the exam because I was lost pretty much all semester).

Granted, I went to a shit law school, but I found that most students ignore the Code and don't read it. Amazing
Anyway, if you're planning on relying solely on outlines and supplements, I'd suggest that you add the IRC to your reading list.

Checking in. Also using Bankman 16th.
Any wisdom for a FIT exam that's more law-school-like (hypos + policy), rather than problem-focused? I have no idea what this means exactly, but that's the intel I've received about the professor.
