Can backpacks be taken into the exam room? The Admittance Ticket Memo seems to indicate that permitted items are strictly limited to those listed (and backpacks are not listed). Do they really expect testtakers to carry their laptop and powercord along with all the other materials by hand?

FTFY

Maybe bring a plastic shopping bag so you can throw it out or crumple it up and stuff it in your pocket or something so you can carry things home? IIRC, watches and earplugs were not allowed at the MPRE. lol.

Texas requires your laptop in a clear 2.5 gallon Ziploc bag. No other bags of any kind. So yes, they probably expect you to carry it in a plastic bag.

why does CA not have a powercord listed in permitted laptop accessories? is it just considered part of the laptop?

Although not listed in the exam bulletin, a power cord *IS* listed in the Laptop Instructions Bulletin. Page 5 says "You must bring your own power cord to the test center each day of the examination."

I took the CA bar last year and they strictly enforced everything for everyone, as far as I know.

There were a ton of people who just left their bags in the hallway outside btw.
