I was wondering if anyone knows of any law journals that promote staff editors to the editorial board after the first semester? And if so, how has it worked in practice? Thanks!

I don't see how this would work. I assume you're talking about 3L year? We don't even have 3L staff members, everyone is technically on the "editorial board," but I understand that it is not this way at other schools with bigger law reviews?

One of the secondaries at my school would promote 2Ls to board positions for the second semester of their 2L year. I say "board position" because they were positions with titles (like "symposium editor") but I don't think there was any election process - I think it was more like the EIC saying, Anyone want to be [position], people volunteering, and the EIC picking. But I don't know that for certain - I'm just pretty sure it wasn't a full election. (And actually, technically I think they were called "staff" and not "board.") I think a couple of the journals the other law school in my market did a similar thing. So it's possible for 2Ls to have a titled position, whatever significance that has. (I'm pretty sure they were positions that 2Ls did just for that semester - they didn't continue them the following year.)

(Our editorial board was only a subset of 3Ls - 13 or 14 board members, the other 3Ls were "associate editors," and 2Ls were "members.")
