1L Top 15% Reception - To Suit or Not to Suit?

So I have this reception to attend next Tuesday from 5:30 until 7:00 at the bar in the stadium. Apparently the "Judicial Clerkship Committee" and the Dean of the Law School will be there.

What should I wear?

Email the committee?

Well, I could email the committee but I don't think that what they suggest will necessarily be consonant with what the rest of the 1Ls do. If they recommend business casual and everyone assumes it's business professional then I've got a problem. I was asking here because I wanted student opinions.

Yes, I made an account on a forum I've only read before so that I could brag about my class rank to a bunch of people I don't know. That makes complete sense. I'm sorry your view of the world is so cynical, but just because that's what you would do it doesn't mean that it's what I do. God forbid I ask a legitimate question on an appropriate forum.

Business casual. Why do the top 15% get a special reception?

No idea. I didn't particularly want to go but my legal writing class is giving those of us who are attending a break (they're scheduled during the same time) so I figured it'd be a good chance to escape a lecture and maybe do a little networking (I basically live in my carrel).

Suit. You will probably want to get a limo and then hit up the clubs in style afterwards.

Sport coat and slacks and take a tie with you just in case.

I'd suit up. Typically even when an invite says "business casual," law students are law students and show up in suits. I wouldn't want to be the lone wolf in bus cas if everyone else isn't. Maybe if you have a charcoal or dark navy you could wear that? That way if the large group is in business cas, you aren't in your more formal blacks. Besides, I'd rather be over rather than under dressed.

I will admit though, I've worn a navy suit skirt with a tweed blazer that is close to my school's other color to things like this (we have other ceremonies where we dress, but not receptions like that) and it has always gone off well. I think a big part is not being underdressed and having the confidence to (sorry to borrow from those bad TLC shows) "own" what you've decided to wear.

Jorts.

Serious response: Email and just ask what the dress will be. Or if you have any friends going ask what they'll be wearing. This isn't that complicated and it's not that big of a deal even if you under or overdress.

What is the consequence of being over or under dressed? Mild embarrassment if you are already an insecure person? Just pick something and don't worry about it.

Seems like a great opportunity to wear an "I'm with Stupid" shirt, or a Butthole Surfers shirt.
