Wear a suit with no tie.

+1. at least in NYC, business casual means suit (sans tie) and you can take off the jacket in the office. though usually in an office setting people wear tie and suit and then just ditch the tie and jacket in the office.

This is not at all true on a universal level.

Dude, it's just a reception. There are probably going to be partners in khakis and button-down shirts. If it says biz-caj, you're fine. The people who always stupid at these occasions are the ones in full-blown suits.

I had a reception that said biz-casual, too. Asked people at the firm and they recommended suits, and most people wore them. Several people there opted out of suits, but it didn't seem to be awkward at all. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you don't make any egregiously bad wardrobe decisions.

Edit: This was secondary midwest market FWIW.

I did a couple of these over break. Personally wore a sweater, others wore suits, most people worse slacks with a dress shirt. Anything in that spectrum would not have been out of place. Definitely leave the tie at home though.

went to one, didn't wear a suit and felt like I should have the entire time because everyone else was in a suit

In my experience, most of the female law students show up wearing dresses or a skirt and blouse, not a suit. You should follow accordingly.
