to take or not to take evidence this semester (before summer

Post by mvpforme » Wed Jan 02, 2013 7:51 pm

My schedule is too full (15 hours including clinic, plus comment and journal), and I want to drop a class. I am choosing between dropping either evidence (i hear this class is criminal-orientated) or an interesting secured finance class, which I prefer. I want to go into civil litigation and will be working mostly in civil litigation for a small firm this summer.

How important is it to take evidence before my summer job?

What should I do?

Its kinda hard to say because summer work depending on your firm can involve discovery and evidentiary stuff, or it could be writing memos that have little to do with evidence. I took evidence and got by on just the E&E.

I would ask your firm to see if they care. If they do not, don't mess around and just take it some other time.

I think Evidence is definitely worth taking, but I don't think you have to take it before your summer job (I would say differently if you were doing PD/DA or something similar, where you might actually be in court, but for a firm, even a small one, I don't think it's that big a deal - you'd be better off reviewing civ pro).

My friend is studying for the February bar right now, and out of all the bar-subject courses he didn't take, he said evidence has been the most daunting. I recommend taking it.

Secured finance is way more difficult than Evidence anyway. Don't even bother with it; especially since you want to do litigation and not corporate.
