When you feel the opposite way about (1L) exams...

Post by chemE_envlaw » Mon Dec 17, 2012 7:39 pm

So far I've had two: Torts (closed everything) and Civ Pro (open book/note). After Torts I was pretty sure I should just quit school because I felt like I spotted nothing and everyone else felt amazing, and now after Civ Pro I was totally relieved that it seemed super simple...but everyone else is going on about how terribly difficult it was. I...am concerned.

My prediction:

Aced torts, median on Civpro.

Don't talk to your classmates after finals, especially not as a 1L. When it comes to performance on finals, you don't know shit and your classmates don't know shit. Law students love to talk about how awesome they were for remembering the exception to UCC 8-985 that was mentioned in a single footnote and how it applied to Scalia's dissent in Worldwide Volkswagon. They're all full of shit.

Just chill, finish the rest, see how it pans out. You did fine.

You should really just repost this in every exam results thread, or see if it can be stickied. It's good panic advice.

I walked out of my Crim exam during 1L praying for a B- and got an A. I walked out of my Contracts exam guaranteeing an A and got a B+. Chill and go on vacation is what you need to do.

I walked out of an exam last semester feeling as though I had failed it. I spent much of the holiday break tormenting over the idea that I would likely have to retake the course and would permanently have a failing grade on my transcript.

Got grades back this week: A-

My non-law school friends officially don't talk to me about law school any more because of my undue panic over grades. I complained about how tough the exams were when they asked how I did. Then, the day that grades came out, I was sitting with them at a bar mid-afternoon (because winter break, ya know). I got the email and was like holy shit holy shit holy shit should I open it you guys? They were like don't be a pussy. So I opened it and... amazing grades appeared. They looked at the grades, and then looked up at me and called me a bitch.

DOESN'T MATTER, GOOD GRADES.

Felt really bad after contracts, but so did everyone, though I realized I missed a few issues. Got a B.
Felt really good after torts but so did everyone, so I expected a median grade. Got a B+.
Felt really good after civ pro but everyone else felt it was hard. Got an A-.

I guess I'm just the exception to the rule about not being able to predict grades. :|

When people say how they felt like they failed it, do they really mean it or do they just say it?

Cause I always pretend I did terrible and tell others how hard the exam was, but I always knew exactly how well/bad I did on it.

I have actually never been surprised by a law school grade I received in law school.

I've also never really had panic attacks waiting for grades, so maybe that's why...

I haven't read the results, but I'm guessing below median on both.

I'm with you. I didn't know relative to the curve, but I knew relative to my other classes how I did.

Condolences. It's possible to improve though - I felt the same way you did after first semester but things got better.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
