Assuming that you are paying for your own bar exam costs, what is the best exam prep course? I would normally think BarBri still regardless of cost but I have been hearing some mixed reviews.

I don't know much about Kaplan, but BarBri is a ripoff. BarBri's selling point is that almost everyone takes BarBri, so BarBri's rule will be the correct answer on the actual bar exam. One thing that's nice is that BarBri has been around forever and the lectures give you clues as to things that are likely to show up on the exam and things that most likely aren't going to show up on the exam. With that said, 2 things that the lecturers said would not show up on my exam did show up on 2 of the essays. Moreover, I really hated BarBri's stress you out and make you think you're going to fail to make you study harder approach. The volume of crap BarBri wants you to do is also pretty ridiculous.

Personally, if I were to do it again, I probably would just get some old barbri outlines second hand and use those. BarBri is NOT worth the $3,500 (or whatever asinine price I paid for it). The dickheads "lectures" consist of playing pre-recorded videos that look like they were filmed in the early 90s. For $3,500 /student, I expected better.

Why do people assume that BarBri is the best? You do realize that BarBri refuses to publicly release its pass rates. Shouldn't that tell you everything you need to know about their product?

And by "in-class" what BarBri actually means is that you will be watching pre-recorded videos in a classroom.

I used A PRODUCT I'VE BEEN SPAMMING HERE FOR SOME TIME for the July 2010 CA bar exam and I passed on my first try. Oh and did I mention that I saved $3000?

Too bad they don't have Illinois.

Curious to see their summer 2012 pass rates once they're available (assuming they publish them). I'm leaning towards Themis right now, but have a few reservations given that they are so new on the market.

Also, the published pass rates might be misleading because (1) so few bar people take their course; and (2) those who do take it are probably a more "elite" group that is confident in own abilities and willing to take the risk of going with someone other than the big dogs.

By signing up for Kaplan's free MPRE course, you can get an idea of what their platform is like.
