Do I type fast Enough?

Post by ThreeRivers » Mon Sep 10, 2012 1:40 pm

I always heard that one has to be "decent" in typing, but not great..

I have no idea what that means / wasn't sure where I landed in that... so I just took a typing test online

Results
58 WPM, adjusted to 55 WPM after errors were taken out

Is this too slow / will it have a negative impact on me during tests?

The one I took previously I wasn't familar on the subject AT all.. just took one in which I wrote up baseball rules and got 72 wpm... lol

Obviously a large difference when I'm more familar with the material

Don't know from personal experience, but I assume ditto for law school exams.

It would benefit you to practice more.

I guess I'll spend some time doing typing games every once in awhile lol

I'm pretty sure my typing speed is directly related to using AIM during high school.

I have ~65WPM at typeracer.com This translates to 1200 words in a 90-minute essay and 2500 words in a 3-hour exam.
Apparently, it's way below the average, but I managed to get decent grades.

Just make sure that the limiting factor on how much info you can get down is how fast your brain moves, not how fast your fingers move.

I mean, I can type passages that I'm simply copying at a ~70 WPM clip. On law school exams, I very consistently get about 2000 to 2200 WPHour, which is 33-37 WPM. That seemed to be slightly above average in terms of my essays' lengths compared to my classmates'. There's a substantial correlation between essay length and grade, but typing speed, unless particularly slow or fast, doesn't really factor into it.
