Beneficial/resourceful on campus clubs to join as a 1L?

In one of the TLS "key to success in law school" threads I read the poster mentioned one of the benefits of joining school organizations first year is that they often have outline banks for members to post their old outlines.

Hope this isn't a dumb question, but what types of clubs are most beneficial in this respect? Or good for other resources like networking? While I obviously would join a club for the solidarity and social aspects, I just want to make sure I join the most practical one seeing as time is precious here...

There is no one club that's going to have the key to everything. Many of them have outline banks of varying usefulness. This will vary from school to school and club to club, as well as depend upon which professors you actually have. The truth is that most good outlines are floating around anyways and you don't need club access to get them (and you can often get access from a friend you know in the club if you really want to see what they have).

Go to clubs for free lunch. That's about it.

At my school, you can join, by which I mean sign up for mailing lists of, as many clubs as you want and you'll often get the info to the outline bank e-mailed to you. The only one I've found to be remotely helpful was the PDP outline bank, and that's invite-only after 1st semester grades are released. All the other good outlines were circulated amongst my 1L friends once the exam prep began in earnest.

My advice is to pursue extracurricular activities that offer clinical experience (e.g. uncontested matrimonials), especially if you've never had any real work experience. Employers like to see pro bono work. A lot of bigger firms use SAs to ramp up their pro bono billing and most of the matters are family court related. I had a lot of good legal WE prior to LS, and you'd be surprised how many questions I received about my 1L pro bono work over any of that. The partner who hired me for my 1L securities law SA position spent 60% of our interview asking me about my pro bono extracurricular activities. Additionally, I love doing pro bono work because I will almost inevitably end up working for far less deserving clients. It's also a good balance to your LS education, especially if your school is very theory-oriented.

1L here. Here's the prevailing wisdom at my school:

Make your contacts at bars. Get your outlines in the hallways (from 2Ls). Get your lunches from mandatory meetings and club meetings.

This is solid advice.

Sorry on behalf of this unhelpful and unfunny douche. ACS and FedSoc had some outlines floating around my 1L year, maybe start there.

In what universe? He has thousands of posts and somehow almost all of them are trolling.

All of the clubs here have outline banks that are accessible online. Just google it. I think clubs are pretty useless and lame. Make friends with your TAs because they probably did well and will be more than happy to share.

TSO BRAVE.

OP, get signed up for emails from every group that won't make you feel weird for getting their emails. Use these groups as a way to save on food costs (and join enough so you can have a menu to choose from). Profit.
