Is it better to be on a secondary journal that interests you or something that is relevant to future employment? Does it even matter?

Pick the one that's the least work.

A thousand times this. No one differentiates between secondaries.

Disagree heartily, brothers. I recommend using the following website to figure out which journal you should join. Of course, because law school is 100% based on credential and PREFTIGE, you should aim to get on the most PREFTIGOUS journal.

Pick one that fits with the story your resume presents. If you have nothing that lines up, as other posters have said, go with the one that is the least work.

I was so excited to put "the one with the least work" but I was beaten to it.

Hint, see how often they publish. A secondary which publishes 6 times a year A. isn't fooling anyone and B. just means more work compared to those that punish (a slip but i am keeping it, publish) twice a year.

Does your school not have any journals that are relevant to future employment and your personal interests? I'd think most people would have some overlap there.

If not, I'd follow the advice everyone else gave.

Interested in finance for green tech. The two with overlap are a business law journal and an ecology journal.

Whichever one publishes less. Mine only publishes 3 times a year and it's glorious.

Whichever one you can actually talk about with a straight face in an interview setting. It should also tie into your narrative.

What if I am already done with OCI?

No idea. I'm actually considering dropping my secondary journal since EIP is over (and it was successful). I'm also not convinced that a secondary journal will actually improve my writing. And it's a huge time sink.

Hmmm.

I think my two choices have a 1 hr./week time commitment.

:x

Don't do that. Come on, man....you used it (marginally) to help you get a job. Plus the journal is relying on you. I am on the e-board of a secondary journal at CLS, and I know you are at CLS. Journal work is a pain, but I did like writing a note and now mine is getting published.

Have an offer? None

Don't have an offer? Easiest one.

Any other opinions on this?

Good! :D

If you PM me the journal, I will let you know what I have heard about it. They all have their +/-.

I think it's a TLS taboo that I am considering doing both.

There's TLS rumors that your employers get notified if you drop out of LR/journal.. or at the very least it'll show up on your transcript, which your firm will find out about when they ask for it at the end of 2L summer. I would imagine this rumor is grounded in some sort of reality, so you might want to look into that first.

My school requires you to notify all potential employers if you drop out or get booted off a journal.
