I had a professor that said "no passes" at the beginning of the semester, and one day a girl tried to take a pass. He flipped shit and, of course, cold called her again the next day. If she had said "pass" again, do you think the professor would have just said, "Oh, well, TLS says participation doesn't matter, so I guess there's nothing I can do here"?

I guess I don't know what you're saying then. First, I said you're going to get dinged for taking a pass every time. You then said:Dany wrote:I said nothing of the sort.
Then Bildungsroman scoffed at the notion of passing every time, noting that his professors don't allow passing. You said:Dany wrote:Maybe this happens to be true for whatever school you're at, but it is definitely not true everywhere.
Do you or do you not think that there's a nonnegligible probability of getting dinged if you refuse to answer every time you're called on?Dany wrote:Technically all of them let you pass if you just refuse to answer the question.

Bils and I go to the same school, and I was making a joke, so first of all *woosh*
Second, I had classes where I didn't answer cold calls and my grade wasn't affected. YOU said that at every school it would jeopardize your grade.
I don't really care about OP's idea and it's probably bad, just pointing out that your absolute was over the top.

Yeah. I think it's safe to say there's a significant probability you'll get dinged if refuse to answer any cold calls 1L year. Said it too strongly the first time.Dany wrote:Bils and I go to the same school, and I was making a joke, so first of all *woosh*

I fessed up in several 1L classes that I hadn't read. Profs didn't hold it against me.
I tried taking a "raincheck" during 2L and the professor accepted and called on me the next day.

FWIW, I'm 1L at a lower T14 and participation is actually a not-insignificant part of my grade in every class. You probably won't be dinged if you rock the final regardless of your participation, but it functions as a sort of insurance policy should you flame out - profs will award up to a 0.3 GPA boost to active participant they feel under-performed on the final exam.

From my experience, asking for a pass or being completely unprepared and sounding like you didn't even take the time to read a brief meant you were going to get called on for the next 2-4 lectures.
Different strokes for different folks, but the fallacy with OP is that class preparation, when done correctly, is actually helping you prepare for the final as well.
