Do u think its helpful to add your rank into the resume when you are only in the top 30%?

My reasoning:

1. If you don't, they'll probably assume you did bad.
2. Top 1/3rd is good. You did better than a big chunk of your class.

Thus, you should put it on. This is just one point of view. Don't take my word for it.

Definitely. I think anything above 50% is worth putting on there. You are just making the firm do more work otherwise (looking up your school's median, etc). And you did well.

Top 30-35% = put it in resume. Anything above that and you should almost definitely put it in resume unless you have a compelling reason not to. Outside of top 35% and above top 50% is less clear.

What if your school says "students may not indicate class rank in application materials" but nevertheless provides the cutoff for top 25% and you're well above that?

My guess is firms probably know the no-ranking policy and would wonder if a student who violates school policies might also violate firm policies.

Our career planning office definitely recommends putting top third or above on your resume.

Are you saying you want to guess your rank or put the cutoff for top 25%? Doing either would be harmful in my opinion--you really shouldn't be putting a guessed rank on your resume and as for the cutoff, UT has grade inflation, which means firms not familiar with UT will assume you have a higher class rank than you really do (and those that are familiar with UT will consider it weird that you're putting the cut-off). Basically, no UT puts either thing on their resume, and if you did you would probably stick out in a negative way if you did.
