A lot of "lay" people believe the trial was a waste of resources. I was wondering what my fellow law students think on the matter.

It was a waste of resources. Prosecutors have discretion to a degree whether to pursue a case and this case was a loser for them from the beginning. Their entire case was on McNamee's testimony, who is not a credible guy to begin with and has a grudge against Clemens.

The entire case was based on Clemens lying about using roids. Who cares. It's a stupid law. Every sports fan knows that the biggest punishment Clemens will ever get is from the fans and HOF, both of which will never view him as the great pitcher he was.

Fuck Congress.

But isn't perjury a crime worth going after? And I disagree that all they had was McNamee. They had a lot of other circumstantial evidence

Perjury might be a crime worth going after under certain circumstances, but this was not those circumstances. If Congress hadn't wanted to create a silly dog and pony show, this wouldn't have happened, and even after he was busted lying nobody cared. If anything, he comes off better now, because he has a not guilty verdict that he can wave at gullible people.

Reminder that MorganStanley, JP Morgan, Goldman, Citibank, Bank of America, and Lehman routinely lied to Congress during the same time period and were sentenced to receive $100s of billions.
