as a new grad, would you want to do this regardless or would it be forgoing the opportunity for needed experience at a firm?

I would personally like to go directly in house for personal reasons, but I agree firm experience is needed to do well in such a position. If a company were to take a new grad though I would assume they would work some training into the position.

Thought that someone would ask about how to find these in-house openings. So?
