I am fairly sure you can't just 'take a year off.'

I would think traditional employers would be incredibly turned off by this. Law firms want to hire people who want to be lawyers, not people who are just looking for something to do until they can jump ship into politics. This may be a great career decision for your political ambitions, and it may lead to great opportunities, but don't expect to come back and impress employers at OCI.

I've added a few more details and a poll. Any other opinions?

Not only do I think this would not be allowed by the school, I think you would murder any chance at OCI.

There are policies for requesting leaves of absences for whatever reason. Obviously if I was denied, I would not pursue this. So for the sake of the poll, please assume that I would be able to get the leave of absence.

The poll is leaning yes, but the responses are leaning no. Could I get some comments from the people voting yes? Are you voting yes because you don't think this will hurt me or because you think the benefits are worth the costs?

The answer you're looking for in the poll is a bit illusive. Depending on your long-term goals, it may be a good idea. If your short term goal is a biglaw job through OCI or transferring to a better school, and that's what your curious about, you will almost certainly get a lot of "bad idea" responses.

I'd like to take a year off with a Fulbright grant.

If you are allowed to take a year off, you will likely delay OCI another year - that is until the fall when you re-enter for 2L.
