Going through a breakup and still doing well this semester.

My girlfriend of 3 1/2 years just broke up with me Sunday. I have not done anything school related since then. It is our first mini-term this week, so at least it is not a big deal. I do have a lot I need to get done: a take home Civ Pro midterm, research for my second trial brief, working on my write-on for law review, and outlines. I just can't seem to find motivation.
I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on wading water through this and still doing well. I am ranked 20/151 at my school right now. So, I would like to stay there, if not go up. I just don't know how to gather the motivation to work hard at school right now. Anyone have any advice?

Compartmentalize, bro. School comes first; you only get one shot at what is probably the most important year of your academic career, so make it count. Everything else is secondary, and (in the long run) probably won't have the significance of your 1L year. So stay the course.
And in your case, doing well (and getting a good job) can either a) get her back, or b) make her feel like shit as you move on to bigger and better things. So there's that.
And FWIW, my buddy ended things with his fiance halfway through the semester, and one of my friends back home lost his battle with cancer in the middle of finals week. We both ended up doing well. It can be done.
Maybe this is cold-hearted advice, but it works. You just gotta push away those things over which you have no control, and instead focus on your studies. It'll pay off in the end.

If anything, use it to give yourself more incentive. Do well so you can get a high paying job and laugh all the way to the bank. Immature? Yes, but it sure can be motivating.

DF, I'm sure you were kidding, but you shouldn't use the word "slut" even if it is in a joking manner. That's like using the N word as a joke...it doesn't really make it any less offensive.
OP--Just try to stay focused. I would recommend getting lots of exercise, eating well, socializing, and establishing a consistent study regime. I have a friend who did well his first semester but then went through a bad break up (similarly serious relationship) and tanked his second semester. He ended up with another girl (he's now a 3L) and is really into her, but he regrets doing so poorly that semester.
In the long run, this will work out. These things usually do. Someone else will come along, etc. BUT, doing poorly in law school is a permanent stain on your record. Good luck

OP - Make it through the semester. Do whatever you have to do. Exercise like a lunatic. Drink. Whatever it is that will occupy your time that isn't spent doing school work so that you don't dwell on the break up now. When the semester is over, take a few bottles of whatever you like, hole up in your room and break some shit.
