I know people think this is some sort of troll, but it isn't.

Isn't it within the realm of possibility that a person doesn't want accolades, doesn't want to give a ridiculous speech and doesn't want people making a big deal out of something that is completely subjective and relatively arbitrary at the end of the day?

Is there not some other way to turn down the "honor" without skipping graduation?

It's not like its a life-long achievement that is going to matter in the long run. In fact, in this market, I doubt if it will even make that big of a difference in the short term.

I suggest the OP take advantage of the valedictorian speech to uphold Camus's idea of "absurd creation" or whatnot. Talk about how being a valedictorian still doesn't give you even the slightest shadow of hope.

And once you're done with that, be like Woolf's Miss La Trobe, and turn a mirror on the audience.

It will mean so much to them all.
