So my school has a 1L only moot court competition. Does anyone have any advice about how to succeed in moot court?

Whip it out.

Go ahead and do this. The fact pattern and law is usually really easy and won't take a long time to brief. As far as oral arguments go, have your opening and roadmap down. (btw, use a roadmap in your oral argument to let the judges know what you plan to talk about).

If you draw respondent, actually respond to what the petitioner talks about versus getting up there and ticking through your pre-determined brief. Same thing goes for your rebuttal if you're a petitioner. Fight the urge to zone out and listen closely to the R's presentation. Take notes.

Try to anticipate the questions you expect to get asked so you don't freeze up. When you've answered the question, get back to your presentation. Don't wait for a signal from the judge to resume.

But srsly, just whip it out.
