Where does the Bar/C&F get their background check/info from?

I am curious as how the Bar/C&F comes by this information. I know this is always a huge debate from previous posts on what to divulge to adcomms vs. C&F. If it's not on my FBI report or state BI report due to expungements, how would they know or obtain the documents? I would appreciate solid info not speculation. Thank you.

I always thought you supply it to them yourself.

You do give them a lot of the info yourself which is why the C&F form runs thirty pages or so (though Washington State doesn't seem to ask for that much). As I understand it, though, most states forward your info to the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBEX) who performs the actual background check. NCBEX gets a few hundred dollars for the service so it is a substantial chunk of a new applicant's bar fee.

Take a look: http://www.NCBEX.org

I've often wondered this myself. Is there anything else out there more comprehensive than a FBI background check? I ran one on myself when applying to LS to be as accurate as possible and it seemed a bit "limited."

I know for a fact that the FBI database is updated from state governments. An expungement through the state (at least where I'm from) removes it from showing on a FBI fingerprint background check. Unless there is some "super secret" Bar Association background check?
