I can vouch for the quality and $50 is a hell of a deal for this if you need a printer. The money you save with a laser printer over an inkjet over time is just insane.

Great printer. A steal really. If your router has a USB port capability you can print wirelessly too.

I've had really good luck with the generic toner cartridges. $18 for 2500 pages = FTW. (I think I was paying $15 for 400 black-and-white printed pages using an inkjet.)

Wow. I don't know anything about Brother, but it's a pretty solid brand? I'll be needing to buy new ink cartridges for my current printer within the next few weeks... but if this printer is legit, I think I'll just cut the expensive ink cartridges and skip straight to the laser printer.

Brother makes fine laser printers. This model is particularly economical. Make sure and buy it on an AMEX or CREDIT CARD that doubles the warranty if you are worried about it breaking.

You can get 3rd party toner cartridges that work great off of Amazon for $18.

If you buy this don't forget to change the printer setting to "keep printing" to prevent it from claiming the toner is out after a set number of pages. You can double toner life that way. I get about 3000 out of mine.

I can vouch for it too, as I have a laser Brother printer. I've had it for several years and have not had a problem with it.

They're legit. I've been using cheap Brother printers for years now. In fact, my current printer is the 2170W, which is nice because it has built-in Wi-Fi. (The newer 2270DW is $121 on Amazon, if you want Wi-Fi built-in.) I've convinced friends and family to use them and I've never heard a complaint about them.

Also, these are eligible for Amazon Prime shipping. If you haven't set up your free student Prime account, now would be a good time.

I have the wireless one and its freakin awesome. I now look down on everyone who has a "normal" printer.

But pickup a cheap $25 one from target for scanning stuff/ color.

I have the wifi one that does double-sided printing. Probably the law school-related purchase I've made so far.

Everything in the Brother series is excellent.

I have used the HL-2240 for ~3 years. It still works excellent even after using generic toner the entire time. No problem with paper jams, etc...

The only downside of the 2240 is 1) it's manual duplex printing; and, 2) it's not wireless

I don't know about the quality of the 2220. It should be made from the same components.

*edit* The only difference I can see between the 2240 and the 2220 is the 2220 is rather ugly.

Brother laser printers on sale are the way to go. If you can afford it, the auto-duplex versions (i.e. Hassle-free double-sided printing), though bulkier, can be nice. Otherwise, $50 for a manual duplex one should suit you just fine.

I've been using a HL-2170W and have had no problems.


Samsung seems to be making some pretty decent ones these days too.
