Macs are freaking awesome for exactly that nine month window between the time they invent something radically new (Ipod, Ipad, Macbook Air), and the time someone else copies it for half the price.

The over-proliferation of them in law schools I can only attribute to feigned affluence, since Macs are hugely popular with higher income brackets.

It is because I am astounded of the lopsided ratio between Mac and Vaio in my classes. I was not expecting to be the only person (in one of my classes) that did not use a Mac. As far as Dells, HPs, etc., they have seemingly vanished.

However, this is the second time in a week I have run into the name Lenovo. I had never heard of the brand until I was recently informed at a law firm mixer that they are very popular at many firms (and have been for a while).

FWIW I saved ~$600 by going directly through the Lenovo website. They offer (or at least did last year) huge discounts for students and for certain models/packages. They are not sold at Best Buy.

Lenovo bought out IBM's computer business ~5 years ago. They're still huge in the business setting, and objectively about the most reliable computers made. They're not very popular with the "bought my computer at Best Buy" crowd. I don't even think places like Best Buy sell them.

How long did your thinkpad take to ship? I'm this close from getting a T420.

A super competitive market it is for computers that are 3oz. For the most part, Macs are entirely overpriced, can't run half the software you want, if you play games that aren't simple flash games then you're fucked... And honestly, it's a form over function matter. People love Macs because they're "stylish" but they are twice as much for half the specs you'd get with a PC. Apple is such an absurd corporation that markets to the gullible assholes that'll pay for whatever they put out, clapping their hands about how cool it is because it has a half eaten piece of fruit on it's cover.

I like my Lenovo just fine, but if I could have gotten an Air for a few hundred more when I bought it, I would have. The knock on Apple is always that you can more PC for less money, and it's true. But Apple makes a goddamn nice form factor for their components, and their trackpads are second to none.

Judging from my experience with Lenovo, the service aside from hardware and the product itself (customer service for the most part and repairs, etc) is fantastic. My new T400 took I think about a week to ship or something like that which was fine.

Want to know the kicker? Last summer my roommates and I used my Thinkpad during a full-blown (yet legal of course) rager and in the morning the hard drive was fried (probably from the fog machine).

I call customer service ------- ONE-TWO days later a box arrives with instructions. I put my warranted Thinkpad in the box and send it off. TWO-THREE days later my laptop arrives with a fresh hard drive. Now that is quite motherfucking impressive.

The battery life on this laptop is ridiculous. It's the perfect notebook for anyone aside from hardcore gamers.

I used to own a high end (highest end) Dell XPS notebook and after some minor issues I realized that their service was absolute garbage (1 out of 5 stars would be my rating, no joke). I can provide a more detailed review upon request. Dell is like the Mitsubishi of Japanese car manufacturers (although I did like one of their notebooks that I tested out for a month which was the business model).
