What do you have? Sony (Vaio) versus Mac (or other)

I expected to see a few more Mac laptops than Sony (Vaio) Laptops, but geeze, it seems to be 50 to 1. In one of my classes, I am the only one without a Mac.
In UG my best friend had a Mac (not sure of the model, other than it had a lit Apple on the cover). Granted I liked her backlit keyboard and the ease of scrolling using the pad but speed wise my year old Vaio was notably faster. So what gives? Is this a 1L fad? On TV shows I notiiced there are more Macs than Sony’s, but not 50-1.
What do you use? If you check other, would you indicate the “other brand” and if you are a 1L or not. Plus anything else that comes to mind. Thanks.

I have a Mac and two Dells. I use the Mac (Air) as my carry-around-every-day machine.
I'm primarily curious as to why you made a Mac v. Sony thread. I've seen far more HPs, Dells, Lenovos, etc. And frankly, it's probably Windows v. Mac 50/50.

That's because the only crap more overpriced than Apple crap is Sony crap. At least Apple delivers on some levels. Sony just sucks all around.

I don't know why you would buy any American laptop that is not Apple. Buy Taiwanese.

Macs are freaking awesome for exactly that nine month window between the time they invent something radically new (Ipod, Ipad, Macbook Air), and the time someone else copies it for half the price.
The over-proliferation of them in law schools I can only attribute to feigned affluence, since Macs are hugely popular with higher income brackets.

Can we just agree that Sony sucks and move on?

It is because I am astounded of the lopsided ratio between Mac and Vaio in my classes. I was not expecting to be the only person (in one of my classes) that did not use a Mac. As far as Dells, HPs, etc., they have seemingly vanished.
However, this is the second time in a week I have run into the name Lenovo. I had never heard of the brand until I was recently informed at a law firm mixer that they are very popular at many firms (and have been for a while).

Lenovo bought out IBM's computer business ~5 years ago. They're still huge in the business setting, and objectively about the most reliable computers made. They're not very popular with the "bought my computer at Best Buy" crowd. I don't even think places like Best Buy sell them.

Unfortunately I have a Toshiba Satelite that I have now owned for 1 year and have sent it in to the Toshiba Repair Depot a total of 4 times to fix hardware problems. Now my left mouse button is loose, I will highly recommend against buying a Toshiba laptop.
It looks nice though!

FWIW I saved ~$600 by going directly through the Lenovo website. They offer (or at least did last year) huge discounts for students and for certain models/packages. They are not sold at Best Buy.

How long did your thinkpad take to ship? I'm this close from getting a T420.

Seriously, doesn't matter, just not a Mac. All the jabber that Apple fans love to do, they're still overpriced designer products with limited functionality. It's not worth paying twice as much for half the specs that you'd get with pretty much any PC.

Only thinkpads rock. The other lenovo laptops (e.g., ideapads) suck. The reliable business laptop you're referring to should be thinkpad laptops.

The Air is, or at least recently was, the cheapest ultraportable on the market with a current-gen Intel iX.

During my first UG year I bought a Toshiba Satellite, I had to send it back within a week. Unfortunately, I purchased it at the biggest crap box store ever, Circuit City―I am
soooo glad they went bankrupt, they would not let me exchange it even though I had only had possession of it for only a week.
A couple years later the monitor failed. Since repairing the screen cost nearly as much as a new computer, I purchased a new laptop. I liked my Toshiba when it worked, but I would not buy another one. I am not totally down on Toshiba―I have a Toshiba flat screen and so far, so good.

Hi Ikki! Post some more guitar tracks dude or PM them to me.
Judging from my experience with Lenovo, the service aside from hardware and the product itself (customer service for the most part and repairs, etc) is fantastic. My new T400 took I think about a week to ship or something like that which was fine.
Want to know the kicker? Last summer my roommates and I used my Thinkpad during a full-blown (yet legal of course) rager and in the morning the hard drive was fried (probably from the fog machine).
I call customer service ------- ONE-TWO days later a box arrives with instructions. I put my warranted Thinkpad in the box and send it off. TWO-THREE days later my laptop arrives with a fresh hard drive. Now that is quite motherfucking impressive.
The battery life on this laptop is ridiculous. It's the perfect notebook for anyone aside from hardcore gamers.
I used to own a high end (highest end) Dell XPS notebook and after some minor issues I realized that their service was absolute garbage (1 out of 5 stars would be my rating, no joke). I can provide a more detailed review upon request. Dell is like the Mitsubishi of Japanese car manufacturers (although I did like one of their notebooks that I tested out for a month which was the business model).

I have definitely noticed the same thing too. It is rare to see someone not carrying a Mac. To a degree this poll confirms what I see, I would not be surprised to see Mac at the +85% level.

A super competitive market it is for computers that are 3oz. For the most part, Macs are entirely overpriced, can't run half the software you want, if you play games that aren't simple flash games then you're fucked... And honestly, it's a form over function matter. People love Macs because they're "stylish" but they are twice as much for half the specs you'd get with a PC. Apple is such an absurd corporation that markets to the gullible assholes that'll pay for whatever they put out, clapping their hands about how cool it is because it has a half eaten piece of fruit on it's cover.

I have a slight preference for Apple products, because of their superior design (not aesthetics; keyboards, trackpads, etc, are just better), but I couldn't see myself ever buying an Apple product that wasn't similarly priced to its mainstream counterpart. I really can't imagine that the kids in my upper-level law classes with the $2500 17" Macbook Pros are doing high-end design work that takes a quad-core processor and 8 gigs of ram in their spare time.

Apple is such an absurd corporation that they are the most successful company on the planet with cash reserves other companies can't even dream about.
I like my Lenovo just fine, but if I could have gotten an Air for a few hundred more when I bought it, I would have. The knock on Apple is always that you can more PC for less money, and it's true. But Apple makes a goddamn nice form factor for their components, and their trackpads are second to none.

So is it inevitably going to be Apple taking over and Microsoft falling?
