3L, biglaw secure...
could potentially secure honors this year with decent grades after a 2L slump. but, am considering taking some credits pass/fail that would make the gpa needed much higher to get the boost
what should i do? do honors matter that much?

I'm just a 1L and don't know much about hiring...but won't honors matter for future jobs? Given the biglaw career trajectory, there's always a chance that this won't be OP's last job.
That being said, if future hiring is based solely on past employment, then party on!

Do what you need to in order to graduate with honors. That credential will stick with you for the rest of the life. Suck it up and someday it could be worth it. Take some birdlaw classes or something if you want to get an easy boost.

Graduating with latin honors follows you for your life, without the credential many people will not know if you were just outside honors potential, or bottom of your class in reading your website info. Sure, you can always tell employers what your actual rank was and put it on your resume, but anyone else probably will not know, including co-workers.
Does it make a drastic difference? No. But if you had the shot at obtaining honors, would you really rather be lazy and cruise by knowing you could have tried a little harder to get honors? Bottom line, I would put in a little extra elbow grease to obtain honors if I knew I was close... but I know many people who could care less. Just ask yourself whether or not you want it that bad.
Congrats on the job though, that is the most important thing!
