I just started my 1L and I'm so lost on what exactly black letter law is.

Everyone keeps telling me that when I read cases I should be looking for the relevant black letter law. They tell me the facts and specific details of the case isn't important but that I should know all the black letter law for the exams...But I can't exactly find it...

Also what are the best commercial outlines?

BLL is the rule that the case establishes. It's not always explicitly stated, especially in older cases, so you have to hunt for it. Occasionally a professor will be nice enough to give it to you.

As far as outlines....really?
