How will I know what I need to know?

It's the second week of 1L classes and despite reading many cases I don't feel as if I've learned much of anything. Is this a problem? When will I start to feel like I'm learning at least some of what may or may not be on the final? Each of my prof's has blocked access to their old exams so I can't see their prior testing methods.
Also, should I be taking notes during class? I've been noting small things pertaining directly to the cases and hypotheticals, however I've mostly just been listening to the conversation hoping to gain some understanding as to what's going on. Would you say this passive gameplan is a bad idea? If so, what do you recommend noting during class? How do I know what I need to know?
