Orientation tips?

Post by nodummy » Mon Jul 18, 2011 8:37 pm

I've read many posts concerning 0L prep and 1L success, however first impressions are key in many places. I know this won't have much, if any, effect on grades, however I'm curious what tips 2L's and beyond have on orientation success. (i.e. meet/greet, things to tell, and what to hold back on telling to future classmates/competitors.) I'm thinking this isn't very important in the grand scheme, however if you regret something about orientation please let me know. Thanks.

It really speaks negatively to your character if you are strategically planning out what to tell and what not to tell people at orientation, while the entire point is to be making friends, forming bonds, and coming together as a community before you go on a real rough journey together.

Resist the temptation to hook up with one of your new section-mates.

If you have to ask, you're in trouble.

I credit my 1L success to my superb chatting up the professors at the cocktail reception. I impressed them from the first day with my maturity and strong grasp of societal issues.
I also used orientation to secure my reputation in the class as a perfect student, and to scope out who I would invite to join my study group, which met for the first time on the sunday before classes began.

Honestly I don't think orientation has any more bearing on your law school social life than it does on your law school grades (in the latter case you rightly pointed out it's zero). Who your friends are is going to be determined naturally at early bar events, in section before and after class, etc. There is literally no reason to give this any thought. Just go through orientation and don't force anything, as that can only make you seem like a tool.

Also, wtf is this. Why would you have the urge to hold anything back? I mean, you should probably "hold back" the following: "Hey my name is XXX and I got here on fully scholarship with a 3.9 from Princeton and a 177"... but that's not to gain a tactical advantage. It's to avoid being a douchebag. If you're wondering if you should hold back what city you're from and what your siblings' names are, you might be paranoid.

If you think orientation will make or break you, then you may have a bigger problem on your hands.

If you are invited out/to do something, do it. People who never hung out quickly got labeled as gunners/arrogant/etc.
