I have been seeing in TLS posts that moot court is only worth it if you can "distinguish yourself"
I don't know what that means... can anyone please explain? I just made moot court appellate division at my school.

On my resume I have the moot court wins listed. In the local area they know what those competitions are and it means something to the law firms. Not necessarily top placement. You can put top 5 placement: Unknown Law School Oral advocacy competition.
It is really good networking too depending on the school. I have met an awful lot of judges and local lawyers mooting.
