I need to work harder/smarter.

All things equal, I'd much rather work at a firm with a tighter compensation scheme, b/c A) I think that creates a better environment among the partners and that trickles down to the associates and B) If my firm just takes the attitude that they'll buy top talent, they won't bother to invest much in my development.
