or the death of SO.
Is it a good excuse to neglect one's duty (e.g. not responding to work emails ...) if one's spouse or SO died two months ago?

It's weird that someone can so clearly show a lack of perspective using only text.

Two months isn't a year. And not only that, he lost her during the holiday season. Where is your compassion? The man is dealing with the loss of his wife, not his pet. I'm sure he had to take some time off, and got behind on things. He's probably in the catch-up phase now. Be patient. Do you have a class with him this semester, or know when his office hours are? Have you tried to talk to him one-on-one outside of e-mail?

My favorite inference is that OP's seems to be trying to get in touch with a prof from last semester to ask about his exam, which could probably wait.

IDK. If OP had a class with this prof now, wouldn't it make more sense to talk to the prof after class?

After my SO died, I still responded to work-related emails as usual. oops .. It actually took me two weeks to recover enough to write back.

Wait... so professors SO died, and you want what? An LOR? Forget it.
Test.... maybe.... like, you know, if you are graduating this spring I would push it. Otherwise just wait until the deans get on him/her for not getting grades in.
And seriously, you think that just because it helped you to get back to work after two weeks that this person is going to react the same way to grief.
Different people do different things. Have some compassion.

in other fields, he would not have been able to get away with it.
then, of course, professors are GOD.

Wow... you are kind of a dick, aren't you? Everyone ITT told you that you were being a dick, and you just had to come back in and hammer the point home, didn't you? Let it go.

Wow, what a cold and empty person OP must be if he cannot understand that some things are just more important. Do you really have so little perspective on life? Before even considering law school, OP, you should really work on growing up and become a more mature person with a sense of tact and class. Without that, you are bound for all types of failure.

In other fields people have staff and other co-workers that can help step in for them in emergencies. Professors usually don't have the same support systems as private attorneys.
And, if you are hoping for a favorable outcome from your request for this professor, you probably are going about it in the absolutely worst way possible. In fact, you are probably turning a lot of people against you in real life, just as you have on this forum, if you are making similar remarks at school or to professors.

I was trying to give OP the benefit of the doubt before, but I can see now that it was pointless. Some people are just hateful.

I particularly like how he refers to her death as an 'excuse.'
