I have until mid-April for 3L write-on

The write-on competition is for the best piece of scholarly work. It will be evaluated on strength of argument, sufficiency of citations, organization, and writing style.
How on earth do I go about nailing this thing? I have won numerous awards in my college life including best brief last year for the entire school. I need to make this thing mint.
This is not necessarily to get a good job or anything, just something I want for personal reasons (plus possibly clerkships in the future). I gave up the opportunity to be on LR when I transferred (I missed the submission deadline) so it would mean a lot to be able to write on.
Help me my TLS friends.

I'd start with reading Volokh's Academic Legal Writing.

Thanks. This "write-on" is kind of hard because of another thing as well. We have full discretion on the topic.....

Edit: Any reason to get the 2010 instead of 2007?

My library had a number of copies, none of which appeared to have ever been opened before. Don't know about differences between editions, I took out the 2007 (the newest they had).
