is giving all males in class low grades sex discrimination?

in one of my classes where participation is worth 40% (so very subjective), there are 13 people total, 1 took the class pass/fail. out of the 12 remaining, 6 dudes got B+ or lower and 6 chicks got A- or higher. in class it was very apparent to everyone that the prof had favorites (the chicks).

wat to do? i dont really care b/c it was a 2 credit class. but on principle alone - wtf?

Are the other "dudes" on your side? While professors have almost unlimited discretion in grading, I think one can easily draw an inference of discrimination from the grade distribution in that class.

Maybe the women participated more or had more significant contributions than the men?

If you've got the time and energy, I would raise hell. I would make my complaint as loud and visible as humanly possible. I would abuse list serves and warn people not to sign up for his class. I would call him out to his face. I would talk to someone who is in a higher position than this person. I would make t-shirts (yes, t-shirts). I'd remind this prof his behavior constantly. In other words, I would wander as close as I possible could to the line of harassment, and then spit over it.

Or just let it go.

(btw, don't be worried about "retaliation" from other profs. In my experience, they're not nearly as tight as people seem to think they are, and there's a really good chance that there's a female prof who hates the OP's prof).

I had a liberal female professor for a class, and I also thought her grade distribution was odd. But oh well, that's life. I had a good friend in that class, and he got a C. He told me that he finally accepted the grade as an even exchange for the last few thousand years of dominance over women.

yes they are on my side. but to be fair, there were a couple dudes who did not participate. and if it were like 1/2 the males in a 50 person class it would be OBVIOUS. but with 12 people, still pretty hard to prove that in fact the chicks just did better. note: some chicks also agree with this assessment.

40% of your grade is based on participation in a class of 13 people? I bet that makes for a miserable semester-long dick-waving contest.

Apparently there weren't many dicks being waved in this contest.

this is possible but i would argue:
1. not to a point where EVERY male CATAGORICALLY deserved lower
2. even if so, it was result of the prof talking only to the chicks. i.e. dudes would try to chime in and the prof would shoot them down to continue his 1-on-1 convo with a girl.

Do you have any information about previous classes? The class size is sufficiently small that it could happen once every so often, but if this has been a trend, then you're probably set.

I had similar feelings in an Immigration Law class where 1/2 of the students were international. Exam was timed take home and even though it was blind graded, it's instantly obvious when a paper was written by someone for whom English is a second language. I got pwned down to a B because of one mistake in a long ass exam. But you just let it go ya know... life's too short.

As a man, this sounds like some bullshit.

Was it a con-lawish touchey feeeley class or was it corporations or some shit.

E- mail the prof with your concerns and demands for re-grading. If she declines go to the ombudsman or dean or whoever will listen to you.

How were the girls looking btw?

Edit: any evidence (pics) of some or all of the girls engaging in hanky panky with the (hopefully sexy) prof should be submitted on this forum.

hmmm, LLM students at GW are graded on a separate curve specifically b/c of this.

no, it was "craft of judging" the co-req to a judicial internship (in order to get credit for the judicial internship)

very good looking, easily top 15% of law school in looks. we totally lucked out.

i checked his grade distribution from last year and its about the same - but no hard evidence.

At my school there are lots of international people doing JD's, as well as LLM. Normally I wouldn't think a professor would care about international/domestic distinction but he was extremely opinionated about loosening up immigration restrictions, etc.

whatever though....all water under the bridge and my GPA is still fine

seriously. i mean, dick waving might be justified if ur looking for letter of rec from your fed courts prof who clerked for the judge u want to clerk for, but all that effort for a 2 credit shit-law seminar is b.s.

Is prof male or female?

How hot was prof?

How hot were the female students?

How hot were the male students (your best guess)?

I need this info before I can give you a good answer.

1. prof was male, 60 year old judge (DC criminal court)
2. not hot
3. easily top 15% at GW (every one, though some in bottom of top 15)
4. median, myself included, plus 2 were gay dudes (not sure if relevant to ur analysis, but just in case)

I'm with you on this one. File a complaint to the dean. I've drafted a copy of it below, which you may (but likely will not need to) edit prior to submission:
Dood's complaint wrote: BRO my profs a hater --> he's poppin CIALIS 4 DAILY USE n givin chicks the As and shit. WTF right?
