Civ pro teach is heavy on the rules... very little focus on the landmark cases and theoretical stuff, but plenty of emphasis on cross-claims, joinder, 12(b)(6) etc.

How do you study for this stuff? Just like flashcards??

Your library should have a copy of "Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules and Commentary" by Steven Gensler. Check out Volume One (the volume with the rules and commentary, not the volume with committee notes). Worked well for me, as we read about 6 cases my entire first semester during class.

Thank you for that. That could help. I have the basic edition of the rules. But is this sort of like with deeper explanations of the rules?

Yes. Gensler (who happens to have been my professor) breaks down each rule into an exam-ready framework, gives examples, cross-references them to other rules, and generally puts them into plain english for a practicing attorney. I know a number of attorneys who practice in federal court often and say it's as valuable to them in practice as it was for an exam.

Glannon doesn't cover a lot of the FRCP. My 1st year we had 2 semester of civ pro required, and the 2nd semester basically covered the entire FRCP, and I found Glannon useless for the most part (unfortunately because Glannon actually makes an otherwise dry subject interesting). Emanuels does a decent job covering a lot of the rules, but it also doesn't cover everything. Forewarning, though, emanuels is a painful because it's really dry reading.

EDIT: Glannon's section on joinder is really good.

I REALLY liked "Understanding Civil Procedure". I found it a lot more helpful (for me) than Glannon's, though I used both in studying. I though the explanation of the rules in "Understanding" was easier to follow, and it pointed out some nuances that I might have missed otherwise. I highly recommend it.

Just read the relevant rule as you see it mentioned in the casebook.

Anybody care to share their Glannon outline? Would be easier then reading the book over and over, just trying to save time. As you know time is precious.
