I never really care what people at my school are doing to study... But I did notice some people are reading up on current cases... like I think there was something big that happened with Erie lately or something civ pro related.

Closer to exam time I plan to skim some firm memo's, recent development cases, and maybe law reviews... just in case a prof gets some ideas from professional material. But I don't see the advantage of reading them as a significant supplement when there are treatise and hypos.

You shouldn't read anything outside the reading, except maybe a prof's recent law review articles in case he decides to put that on the exam.

That is not to say the professor won't include contemporary topics on the exam, but rather the probability of you finding the specific thing is low enough that any time spent studying those outside sources is incredibly low-yield. Just learn the material well enough to be able to quickly analyze whatever novel topic your professor includes on the exam.

Don't do that in hopes of getting an exam edge. You won't, and you will possibly mislead yourself. If you genuinely enjoy it, and it doesn't burn you out, then by all means read interesting stuff for fun and engagement. If you can engage on cases in addition to your class reading then more power to you.

Maybe Shady Grove from late last spring? It was pretty interesting. In any case, no need to keep up with current stuff unless you want to for your own curiosity. It won't help grade-wise.

I think I'll just start with the federal reporter 1st edition and work my way up

I highly recommend it if you want to reference cases in conversation as an attempt to show off to others or if you want to be the douchebag that uses class time to show the professor how he found "the application of this case so interesting in the recent judgment..."

Read E&Es if you're confused, or law review articles about cases or topics you're interested in (for your own edification only, but sometimes you can learn nuggets that will help on a test, especially in classes like conlaw). There's no need to waste your study time browsing Lexis for up-to-the-minute cases about offer and acceptance.
