so how do I take notes on a mac? using Pages?

I am using Pages and it blows! I am just using default blank page, so it's really just me hitting the tab key a ton of times.

Is there a better way to use Pages for note-taking?

Also, is it worth getting Word for 150? I didn't think so but pages... ughhhhhhh

I dunno but I always see people in class with their Macbooks and Pages open and I wonder how they even get by. I guess OneNote does that to people, though.

+1

I have all my notes for a class in 1 document. Then during class I separate that document into different windows. Outline in one, leews casebriefs in another, and my class notes in yet another. Cant use spaces with Circus Ponie (annoying) but its easy enough to navigate between the windows and it beats Word..

My set-up (because my school requires a full window os to be installed to take exams) consists of windows 7 (30 bucks) + VM Ware Fusion. I just windows and mac at the same time, so I can use onenote. I would vouch for this method than circus ponies or any other note taking software for the mac. Cost wise windows 7 was 30, VM Ware was 30, and 70 for full microsoft office.

The only reason I'd own a mac for notes is to use TextMate.

Which brings me to an interesting thought: I bet I can make an extension which allows for brief/IRAC templates.

It took me a little while to get used to it, but I am loving this program now.
Taking notes and doing my outlines with this.

Tried to use CircusPonies, but broke down and started using OneNote via VMware Fusion.

That's what I've been using. It's perfectly fine.

I'm using the circusponies notebook b/c I already HAVE it... but will probably switch over to Word once I get the 2011 version.

I think for circus ponies to be effective you really have to get it before school starts and devote a few hours to figuring it out. I got it a few days ago and it is not intuitively easy to use. Immediately went back to Word; I agree with the poster that wrote that WordMac actually is pretty good.

TextMate is a great tool as well. I use it for writing code and general note taking. It is a very flexible tool, recently, for some classes, I have been using OmniOutliner because it forces me into more of a outline format.

This helped me figure out how to use Notebook for law school. It definitely involves some practice but pays off in the end.

Much more efficient than Word.

why not pages? It is fully customizable, searchable, and you can set your Fkeys for lots of different shapes/color/text/highlights etc as bullets which makes outlines very nice. I used it for years in UG. Loved it. Make your self a "note taking" template and you will be very happy. Unless law school notes require something more?? Also, there are hundreds of templates out there you can download/share for free!

I am not certain what is needed in law school note taking that is not in pages? And you get massive help from any apple store,and/or discussion threads on apple web site.

Can any law student reading this tell us what is the benefit from One Note? Circus Ponies?

Thanks. Im open to any of them, but I love pages over word, and have really learned to fly on it. Am I going to be missing something? Also, Apple is coming out with a new iWork soon (rumor, but certainly they are due for an update). I would not be surprised that Apple addresses the notebook issue ! I certainly hope!

here is a link for templates/sharing. There is one with ruled/lined paper. Very nice.

--LinkRemoved--

If anyone wants a nice clean template of classic blue/white lined note paper for pages--> go to "pages" -- "education" -- page 12 on the link above and download it for free! Then you have the template and can customize it for yourself with bullets, highlights, whatever.

I found that having on-the-fly different bullets and font color changes really allowed me to make awesome notes in UG. I knew that a "red star" bullet meant one thing, and a normal little dot was another... etc... Don't underestimate the power and ease of Pages. I was a Word guy for years, and Pages finally sucked me in. I find it much much easier and intuitive.

Ok, one more edit: Here is a great tutorial on how Pages does this stuff for law school. And you can use the above notebook layout too and build your template/notes on top of it. I plan on doing this soon! Notice that you do/can create a table of contents as you go so it is very searchable, and you can always use control-F to search all day long..

Thanks for all the info.

Isn't Word like 150 bucks though? I've seen "academic" Office for that price. Is there a cheaper way? I will try the Pages advice above first
