Hi, I know this may have been addressed already but how important are secondary journals? I recently got onto one of the secondary journals at my school and I am wondering if it is really all that helpful and worth the time commitment.

Unless you want to do it for some reason, it's probably not worth it, especially if you already have your interviews lined up through OCI.

It looks good, but i would recommend working as a law clerk somewhere during the semester instead of devoting a lot of time to a journal.

Real world experience part time during the school semester > looking up citations/sources part time during the school semester

A journal is generally better than nothing, however (i.e. nothing aside from law school and law school organizations). The problem is, no one can gauge how much (and a lot of employers really don't care about journals - many prefer them, but it would rarely be a deal breaker).

The ranking as I understand them -


1) Law review
2) Moot court
3) Nice internship
4) Secondary journal
5) Wal-Mart greeter

If you get a high position on the editorial board (EIC, EE, ME) of a secondary journal, it can make a positive difference in 3L OCI.

This is especially true of managing editor, because many people mistake it for editor in chief.
