Picking a note topic

Better idea to pick a note topic related to the area of law you want to practice in, or to pick a note topic that has a higher chance of publication?

Could you explain how those two would be mutually exclusive? Did the case note editors give you a list of possible cases, none of which interest you? I'm not really understanding how any area of practice would cripple your chances of publication.
