I don't have any ambition regarding a publishing "career" - I'm just a rising 2L (well, I guess some Harvard/Yale kids have these types of ambitions, not me). I do have a more scaled-down ambition of finding an interesting topic, and putting in a serious effort during my 2L year to try and get published on one of the journals at my school (Boalt).

Well, just got an email from my professor inviting me for a meeting to talk about a topic - so end of thread for me.

What is the point of getting published? I am a 2L at a (historically) top 30 school with grades that probably put me into the top 5 or so students and I am really interested in academic writing. I am a pretty dang good writer and have won awards in the past for some very competitive contests and literary magazine publications. I did not attempt to write onto LR as I was a transfer and it was very late in the game when things started coming to fruition.

Anyway, how is it done and what good does it do for one w/out an HYSC JD?

There are plenty of professors out there who did not go to the T14.
