I am not sure if I will do the bulk of my studying at home or in school--I have a 1.5 hour commute each way and I would imagine that in the fall I will be studying more at home (to avoid shady subways in the winter months when it gets dark earlier) and in the spring I will likely stay longer hours in school. That said, I have commuted 1.5 hours to school before and found that I accomplish absolutely nothing once I get home because I am so drained. So basically, I'd like a bag that will be able to fit all my books as well as my laptop and not kill my back during my long commute. I like pretty, cutesy or otherwise colorful things and my taste is such that anything that can be termed "unisex" usually does not appeal to me. So, with those guidelines in mind, please help me pick:

yeah, it sucks. But it is also an opportunity to study/get some work done/catch up on sleep. Very draining though.
goldeneagle, I added links

I dunno about the bag, but I recommend the Life of a Law Student podcast for your commutes.

If you want to avoid killing your back while on your commute, I'd think you'd want a wheeled backpack.
Google 'jansport superbreak wheeled'--some of the patterns are decent. If you want something on the feminine side:
or
They also have a big houndstooth that's too bold for me but might work better for a girl?
I'm not sure how durable they are--they're pretty cheap for wheeled bags.
DaKine makes one too ("Wheeled Prom Pack [Womens]") but it has the single pole handle, and a double is better in case you want to sit something on top of the pack while wheeling it along (like a purse, shopping bag, or briefcase.) With one pole things just fall off.

i like the green jansport one. it's girly without being obnoxious, and i like jansport bags in general for comfort.

Grow up. This isn't Saved By The Bell. The make the same pack w/o wheels and she doesn't have to wheel it around school.

yea well the fact is that wheelie backpacks were gross in middle school, are gross now, and will continue to be gross for the rest of eternity.
if you want to save your back, get a nice tiny wheeled suitcase. much classier and will not make anyone feel like beating you up in the parking lot.

Really? I'd think the wheeled overnight bag would be much more bag-lady LOL.
If I had a 1.5 hour commute I think I'd take a gamble on my classmates being adult enough to overlook a slight backpack faux pas.

How is that good for commuting?
The books are huge and heavy. At four inches wide, that bag will hold one casebook.

uhhhhh not a fan of coach. i think with that kind of money you can get a less flashy bag that will last just as long, and be appropriate in more situations. and 16-1/4 (L) x 12-1/4 (H) x 4-3/4 (W) ....i don't think that'll take more than one or two large books, but it would probably hold notebooks, purse stuff, maybe a small laptop or a netbook.

Coach is made in China now, but costs as much as ever, FWIW. So maybe not a great value.

yeah I just threw the coach option out because I realized Im going to be bringing lunch with me and I'll need much more space than that, especially given the fact that I need to be fit my books in there.
I just really hate backpacks..sigh. guess I will bite the bullet and buy the jansport

I think a backpack is the best option. You'll end up walking like the hunchback of notre dame if you get something you can just carry on one shoulder.

I kno you're not supposed to have a rolley bag in law school but can you explain why this is? Is it a tell that the person may be a gunner?

I prefer a cute bag too, but like you, I gave in, in the name of practicality. Being old and arthritic, I will take being a dork over being in pain, so I went for the wheelie backpack.
I chose the Jansport Driver 8. It has a laptop sleeve, which the Superbreak doesn't, and it slightly lighter while having more capacity.

And then to compensate for the boring backpack, I bought myself a cute purse that will coordinate with it.

this is a good option. use the wheelie until you get within a block or two of the law school, then put it on your back.. no one will be the wiser.
