i'm a 1L now, just started at a t4 school. i'm curious to know if 30 hours a week is going to be good enough to pull off into the top 10% of my class. this is just the study hours i plan on doing for the weekdays. mon-friday at school only. if i need more or whatever is suggested i can adjust study more or longer each day. my classes all end by 1:45 mon-friday and from 2-8 pm i will def be in the library studying. Just curious to know if this is enough or how much you all have been studying or plan on studying, i know there is several posts about this prior to this one but i just didnt want to search through them all to find them. thanx

Here's the deal: Your grades are directly connected to the amount of time you spend in the library studying. Just make sure you are in the library for longer than 90% of your classmates, and you're sure to be in the top 10%. Hth.

If there's one thing you should learn about life, its how simple everything is.
LSAT scores are exactly correlated to how much time you spend studying. Admissions are exactly correlated to your numbers. Class rank is exactly correlated to how much time you spend studying. OCI offers are exactly correlated to your grades. Your wife's hotness is exactly correlated to how much money you make. Your children loving you is exactly correlated to how often you beat them. And your value as a human is exactly correlated to how much net-value you have.

Sadly, if you're asking a question like this, I've got a bad feeling that top-10% is out of the question.

The time you study is irrelevent. Its about what you are studying and how much of it you are understanding and retaining. Some people could study 10 hours a week and be top of the class and others have to study 60 hours a week to reach that level.
We don't know you or your level. Ask yourself not some strangers on the innanetz.

Yeah, what makes me have the suspicion that the people at the top are smart enough to figure out for themselves based on the facts of their own life what the fuck to do to succeed, rather than having to ask the uninformed masses for specific advice about their subjective needs?

IMHO, there is no such thing as "enough." I'm sure this will sound odd to you, but you will most likely always feel like you could be doing more. You do have to draw the line somewhere and put the books down, but I can tell you that from about the third week in August to about mid-May I never feel like I've done enough.
I don't mean to suggest that you have to be studying all the time either. As Steve suggested, figure out what works best for you. I'm only saying that I don't think I met too many people during 1L year who ever felt they had done enough.

Perfect. This is what I'm thinking 99% of the time I read posts at TLS.

wouldn't this apply to any post on tls? its the same as asking whether or not you qualify for a certain type of race or what schools can you get into based on your grades. those are things everyone has known about their lives as well. its just a simple question to find out what individual 1L's put into studying or have done in the past and the success of that effort.

Your inability to properly utilize the apostrophe cements for me the supreme unlikelihood of a top-10% finish, though I wish you the best.
And no. The salient difference between a typical TLS question, say, "Will 3.8/172 get me into BU?" and "Will 30 hours a week get me into the top-10% of my 1L class?" is that the former is possible to answer.

No, it doesn't. There are questions that have objective answers. This is not one of them.
Only you know exactly how much studying you need to succeed. Some people are going to get better results studying 10 hours a week than others studying 50, depending on factors like efficiency, persistence, organization, and intelligence. The amount that other people have studied or are studying is completely useless information to you. It is irrelevant.
The only reason to ask others how much you should study is because somewhere between your ears you're scared out of your wits that no matter how hard you work, everyone else is working harder than you. The best thing you can do for your psychological well being is to accept right off the bat that a) everyone is smarter than you; and b) everyone is working harder than you. Then you know where you stand and aren't attempting to begin from a position of fear and doubt. Then you do the best you can.

yeaa your right..you got me all figured out already, your probably the smartest person on TLS. there is fear, confidence, anxiety all mixed together when your starting your 1L. It's expected buddy, regardless of how intelligent you are or how well you know your study habits you just cant sit there and tell me its the same as studying in undergrad, or that you weren't ever curious to know other individuals study habits. but yea you got it..your the best

Strong use of "your" instead of "you're."

Just stop sleeping. If you study while your classmates are wasting those 8 hours in bed, you'll be the top of your class for sure.
