Hi guys,

Quick question here. I'll be starting law school this Fall and own a mac. Will I have time once I arrive to install windows/onenote? I don't want to start classes without having everything ready to go!

I just found out that my school offers free windows 7 to students. Should I grab a copy via bootcamp? What is the name of the program that allows you to toggle between operating systems?

I think you will be just fine. There's plenty of time to get everything set up. Obtain a copy of Windows XP or 7 and OneNote.

Make sure that you install any Exam Software on the Windows partition and take the practice exam before exam day so you can make sure things are running allright.

Is that one of those programs which runs Windows under the MacOS? I was never a big fan of that, preferred the bootcamp method. I find Windows runs a bit smoother that way. I can't recommend trying to install exam software on a Windows which is emulated by a Mac OS. I actually don't even think they'll run stable. Check with your school and find out which Examsoftware you're using. Install it fresh on your Windows partition and you should be fine.

Circuponies does nearly everything onenote does. I actually think I like it better. You can use it for free for one month. $30 to buy. Also, you can't run exam software in vmware. Certain version won't even run if vmware/parallels is installed on the machine at all.

vmware. the free one is wine, but it's a huge pain to use.

Wine is a pain. Crossover Office is better but you have to pay for it and onenote doesn't currently run right in it. Exam software won't run at all in it.

Yeah. And some don't. Just to make sure I assumed whatever exam software he'll deal with won't run on his Mac.

So, rather than saying that you skipped to the most expensive and difficult option that also derives him of a large part of the benefit of owning a mac (OSX) and nearly 60 gig of hard drive space?

What school are you going to? Many, if not most, now have Mac versions for taking exams. I think circus ponies is as good. You can download it and try for free for 30 days.

Well, that sucks. Examsoft only runs in Bootcamp. It won't run in vmware or parallels so you don't have much of an option.

is it really 60 gigs? I have a 232 gig HD though so I should be ok right?

Can I use vmware for taking notes via onenote? Perhaps i'll explore circusponies as well.

It's pretty damn big. Especially because you need room for a swap file and such. For bootcamp, you have to make an entire separate partition so you have to allocate anything you will need in the beginning. You should have room but you'll be losing a chunk of space.
